FAVELA TOUR is an essential experience if you seek an insider’s view of Rio. We are a socially responsible, non-intrusive operator. This tour introduces you to another Rio, hidden within the heart of the city: the favela. With nearly 1000 favelas across Rio, mostly located on former public lands along the hillside, these communities house approximately 20% of Rio’s residents yet remain largely unseen by those outside their borders. Our goal with this tour isn’t just to educate visitors about favelas; it’s to provide them with a completely fresh outlook on life in modern day Brazil. During our journey through two major favelas – Vila Canoas and Rocinha (the biggest in all of Brazil) - we uncover picturesque landscapes that at first glance may seem like any other urban area, until upon further inspection reveals itself as a hubbub of creativity, bustling trade, and warm hospitality among its inhabitants. It should also be noted that majority of Samba Schools parading during Carnaval originate directly out of such neighborhoods. Join us on this enlightening excursion where participants can expect themselves immersed deep into various facets of contemporary Brazilian culture—some familiar while others might prove unsettlingly revealing.
