In 1756, Douro became the very first demarcated and regulated wine region in the world. Indeed, it covers approximately 250,000 hectares (618,000 acres) which makes it the biggest mountainous vine growing region worldwide. The Unesco committee declared by unanimous vote on 14 December 2001 the Upper Douro valley wine producing zone a World Heritage site saying "this longstanding culture of viniculture had been creating over two thousand years a culturally significant environment with exceptional scenic qualities reflecting both technical progress and socio-economic development".
