Both external and internal surfaces showcase intricate bas-relief carvings that tell stories of ancient times. **THE SOUTH GATE TO THE CITY WALLS AND INNER SANCTUARY COMPLEXES AT ANGKOR THOM:** The Prasat Bayon Temple Complex also referred to as Angkor Thom features architectural elements inspired by Buddhism and dates back to the end of the twelfth century early thirteenth century when Emperor Jayavarman VII ruled Cambodia. This structure comprises fifty-four towering spires symbolizing control over fifty-four regions under both pre-existing and newly acquired territories of the mighty Khmer Empire. Each tower bears more than two hundred sculpted stone faces radiating smiles towards visitors—a unique feature among all other structures worldwide. Although once flourishing, sadly, these magnificent edifices suffered significant damage due to invasion forces led by Chams around 1811 CE. **PRASAT TA PROHM TEMPLE:** Built toward the conclusion of the twelfth century by Lord Jayavarman VII, Ta Prohm served initially as a religious site honoring Buddha until being transformed into one devoted to Hinduism sometime afterward. During this transition period, certain sections originally designed according to Buddhist principles underwent destruction only to give place to new constructions reflecting Hindu beliefs instead. Thusly, several original gallery spaces housing earlier depictions related specifically to Buddhism met unfortunate fates having been demolished subsequently substituted entirely with those embodying themes central to Hindu mythology.
