The Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies (BCSS) is an active marine research station and Africa's first ocean observatory, located within the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park in Mozambique. The BCSS combines long-term marine research with conservation efforts and operates a fully functional 5☆ PADI Dive Centre to ensure that all scuba diving activities contribute directly to scientific monitoring and conservation goals. Its research focuses on conducting biodiversity assessments, surveying habitats, tracking large fauna populations, collecting oceanographic data, and utilizing scientifically verified, three-dimensionally mapped dive locations. As part of its Scientific Training Programme, the BCSS offers practical instruction in marine sciences methodology and conservation practices while functioning more like a professional research institution than a voluntary program or tourist destination. Any income earned from dives and courses are invested back into marine research projects, preservation programs, and strengthening capacities locally throughout Mozambique.
